Physicists at MIT have broken new ground in the exciting field of lasers. They have successfully shown that germanium laser technology can be extended to use in personal computing, sometime in the near future. This will have vast implications in the world of hardware. Many hardware analysts are noticing that we appear to be reaching a sort of limit for data transfer speed . The solution thus far has been reducing and optimizing the semiconductors that transfer the electrical

When the folks at Netbook Navigator first asked me to write about the company’s new 9 inch tablet PC I had a hard time getting past the high price tag of nearly $1200. But that price was for an early model that packed 3G capabilities and was intended for early adopters. Now Netbook Navigator has u pdated the pricing for the Nav 9 tablet and the base model costs just $799. Yeah, that’s still enough money to pick up

French retailer fnac has posted a product page for a new Asus netbook model called the Eee PC 1005PE-H . Basically, the laptop is identical to the Asus Eee PC 1005PE in most respects. It has the same design, keyboard, and processor. But the Eee PC 1005PE-H comes with more RAM and storage space than its cheaper sibling, and ships with Windows 7 Home Premium instead of Windows 7 Starter Edition. There’s no word on whether this model will

Apple’s recent unveiling of the iPad was more than a simple product announcement intended to make consumers want to buy Apple products. The event proved analysts with an opportunity to examine Apple’s focus. In short, Apple’s focus is going to be on mobile devices. This may not come as a surprise, considering the success of the iPhone, a mobile device par excellence. Apple is going to make its own chipset for the iPad, is refusing to support Adobe Flash,

* No actual pictures of the 1005PE-H just yet A new high end version of the ASUS Eee PC 1005PE has popped up in France known as the 1005PE-H. My first thoughts were perhaps it comes with a HD 1366 x 768 display, but no it’s the standard 1024 x 600 resolution. You’ve also got the same Atom N450 processor and a slightly lower capacity 4400 mAh battery (11 hours). What you do get though is an upgrade from

Ubuntu Netbook Edition is a light weight version of Ubuntu Linux optimized for netbooks. It used to be called Ubuntu Netbook Remix, but this spring it will graduate from “remix” to “edition” status . The operating system is designed to play well with low resolution displays, limited storage capacity, slow processors, and it’s specifically optimized for machines with Intel Atom CPUs. But one thing that’s always puzzled me about Ubuntu Netbook Remix is that some of the applications that

The Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook is already available with WiFi, Bluetooth, and an optional HSPA 3G modem. But it looks like a 4G WiMAX modem might be available soon as well. Wireless Goodness spotted an FCC filing for a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 with WiMAX. It’s not clear from the filing whether Dell will be partnering with a WiMAX provider such as Sprint or CLEAR to bundle the netbook with a data plan, or if the mini-laptop will

Apple’s 27-inch iMac has had big problems, most of which Apple has not yet solved. The company is getting desperate and, in the latest move of the iMac saga , is offering to buy back defective iMacs from users in the UK. Apple has been overwhelmed by complaints of yellow-tinted iMacs . No one is quite sure what is causing this problem—it could be an inherent LCD defect or a driver issue. Since this problem is so widespread, Apple

Johannes from NewGadgets.de has his hands on one of those new 10-inch Dell Mini 10s but his has a HD 1366 x 768 display and a Broadcom Crystal HD Accelerator cards inside. This model is not yet available and should be coming out mid to late February (this month). Nothing has changed externally, you’ve still got a glossy screen covering the HD 1366 x 768 goodness. The Asus Eee PC 1008P Karim Rashid Edition is a distinctive looking nettop, thanks to its designer edition crocodile-style cover. It’s also one of the thinnest netbooks on the market, measuring just 1 inch thick. Engadget has posted a review of the laptop and the good news is that it looks as good in person as it does in the pictures. The bad news is that the battery life is pretty subpar for a netbook with an Intel Atom

Fujitsu announced a new 11.6” notebook back in September last year called the LifeBook P3010. It started to go on sale late last year and I completely forgot about it, not that I really care for Fujitsu laptops but this one looks pretty decent, apart from being red, and I just noticed a good deal pop up at a couple of places for about $50 cheaper (sells for about $549). First, the specs: 11.6” 1366 x 768 display, AMD

Yesterday the folks behind the Symbian smartphone operating system announced that the platform had gone open source . Now it looks like Symbian may be planning to move beyond the smartphone and port the OS to tablet and netbook-style devices. We’ve already seen that Symbian can be ported to run on devices with an Intel Atom processor . In an interview with ZDNet, Symbian Foundation CEO Lee Williams said it’s “very likely” that we’ll see a tablet or netbook

The Asus Eee Box EB1501 is a small form factor desktop computer, or nettop. And when I say small, I mean, if you pick one up, there’s a good chance your friends will confuse it with a Nintendo Wii. But Asus still manages to pack a DVD drive, NVDIA ION graphics, and a fairly sizable fan inside. If you want to upgrade the RAM, wireless module, hard drive, or other components, you’ll want to know what the insides look

While the Intel Atom line of chips may reign supreme in the netbook space, I’ve become a pretty big fan of Intel’s CULV chipset over the last few months. These low power chips show up in thin and light computers including a number I’ve recently reviewed such as the Asus UL20A , Dell Inspiron 11z , and Acer Aspire 1410 . While they cost more and use more power than Atom chips, they also provide significantly better performance and

Jim Zemlin, the Linux Foundation’s executive director, identified the inhibiting factor to mobile Linux’s growth on his blog last week, in response to the iPad’s launch. It was not a specific hardware or software defect he mentioned, but instead the culture of the Linux product world. Quite simply, he said, “Apple’s consistent user experience is far closer to magical than most things currently running Linux”. It is a sobering but honest point that he makes regarding one of the
